With a vast history that goes back thousands of years, Uttarakhand, formerly known as Uttaranchal, has a rich and varied history. Here is a quick summary of Uttarakhand's history:

Prehistoric Period: People have lived in the Uttarakhand region since then. The Stone Age marks the beginning of the earliest recorded communities in the region. The region was a part of the Maurya, Gupta, and Harsha empires, which ruled over ancient India.

Mediaeval Period: Various dynasties ruled over the Uttarakhand region during the mediaeval era. From the 7th through the 11th century, the Katyuri dynasty, which was descended from Katyuris from the Katyur valley (today's Baijnath), dominated the area. They established Kartikeyapura, today known as Kartikeya, as their capital.

The 10th century saw the rise of the Chand dynasty, which had Kirtipur (today's Kirtinagar) as its capital. They ruled over Kumaon until the Gurkhas from Nepal conquered the area in the 18th century.

Finally, in the year 2000, the state of Uttarakhand was separated from the state of Uttar Pradesh and given the capital city of Dehradun. The purpose of this action was to grant the people of Uttarakhand greater autonomy and the capacity to manage their territory in accordance with their particular requirements.

Due to its scenic beauty and religious significance, Uttarakhand has concentrated on its development, preservation of its cultural legacy, and promotion of tourism since becoming an independent state.
